Malva sylvestris is commonly known as Hollyhock or Tree Mallow. It is a short-lived perennial that produces a bushy plant with deeply cut leaves. This Mauritiana variety has lovely purple, 2 - 3 inch blooms that are nicely scented. It is short-lived but will often reseed itself keeping a Hollyhock in the flower border for many years. Hummingbirds and butterflies are very attracted to it. After flowering, cut it back hard. In some areas the Hollyhock will have a second bloom in late summer. Start the seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seeds into the soil but do not cover them. Keep them moist until germination. With temperatures of 70 - 75F, germination is normally within 28 days. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space the plants 36 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil. During the blooming season, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks.

Viola cornuta are charming little flowers for the old-fashioned garden! This variety, Admiration, has large deep violet blooms. They are great for containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes or plant them in mass groupings in the front of the flower border. Butterflies and bees will enjoy the Violas that are in your landscape! Violas are similar to pansies but are hardier and longer blooming. They prefer cool conditions, so after they bloom in the spring, cut them back to encourage another bloom again in the fall. They prefer rich, well-drained soil, and they like full sun to partial shade. Once Violas are established, they will often reseed but are not considered to be aggressive. After the danger of frost has passed, directly start the Viola Admiration seed outdoors in a clean, weed free bed. Cover the seed lightly. Maintain moisture until germination occurs. With a temperature 68F, germination is usually within 21 days. Space the plants 8 inches apart.

Linaria maroccana is a lovely wild flower that is native to Morocco. It is commonly called Toadflax and it has miniature snapdragon-like flowers. In the wild the blooms are violet in color, but through cultivation there are now shades of lavender, yellow, orange, red, pink, and white. Hummingbirds and butterflies both enjoy the blooms. Toadflax is lovely in the front of the flower bed! Start Toadflax seed outdoors in the spring as soon as the ground can be worked. Prepare a loosened and weed-free seedbed. The seed should be gently pressed into the soil but not covered. Keep the seed moist until germination occurs. With a temperature range of 55 - 65F, germination is usually within 21 days. Grow Toadflax in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained, light, sandy soil. It is usually resistant to deer.

~ ~ ~ WE OFFER BOTH PKT. & BULK SIZES ~ ~ ~Tea-oil Camellia - Camellia oleifera Cold Hardy To Zone 6b ~!! Camellia oleifera, which originated in China, is notable as an important source of edible oil (known as tea oil or camellia oil) obtained from its seeds. It is commonly known as the Oil-seed Camellia, Tea Oil Camellia, or Lu Shan Snow Camellia, though to a lesser extent other species of Camellia are used in oil production too. Uses The seeds of Camellia sinensis and Camellia oleifera can be pressed to yield tea oil, a sweetish seasoning and cooking oil that should not be confused with tea tree oil, an essential oil that is used for medical and cosmetical purposes and originates from the leaves of a different plant. The seed oil can be used as treatment of ringworm. Tea-oil Camellia is commonly over 80% monounsaturated fat. As such, it reduces LDL ('bad cholesterol'). Tea Oil is also known as "Tea Seed Oil" when sold as cooking oil in supermarkets throughout Australia, New Zealand and the United States. It can also be used in textile manufacture, soap making and as an illuminant. Camellia oil is also traditionally used to protect Japanese woodworking tools and cutlery from corrosion and is currently sold for that purpose. It is widely distributed in China and is cultivated extensively there. It is found in forests, thickets, banks of streams and foothills at elevations of 500 to 1,300 metres. Growing Info: Scarification: Soak in hot tap water, let stand in water for 24 hours Stratification: cold stratify for 60 days Germination: sow seed 3/4" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed

42 days. This extra-early variety is a real workhorse, finishing in just 42 days yet producing truly tender, crisp 4-inch bulbs on compact plants. Direct-sow in early spring for late-spring harvest, or in midsummer for fall harvest. Space the plants about 6 inches apart. Unlike most vegetables, Kohlrabi can take a little shade without damage. Hardy Iceplant is the solution to many a gardener's dilemma -- how to cover those hot, dry garden spots where the hose doesn't reach or water is scarce? Very adaptable to heat, humidity, and drought, this ground cover vigorously spreads its succulent foliage and bright two-tone blooms far and wide to beautify the garden floor. These blooms are about 2 inches wide, with masses of tightly-packed, matchstick-thin violet petals surrounding a large white center. They appear just above the olive-green foliage, which is thin and pointed, and they act as a magnet for butterflies. But the amazing thing is their bloomtime -- they begin in late spring in most climates and simply don't quit till frost, going right through the dog days of summer and into fall without dropping a petal!Just 6 inches high and spreading up to a foot wide, 'Stardust' is a great choice for containers as well as the garden. It will spill over the sides of flowerpots and baskets, trailing blooms in its wake. And in the garden, it makes a great carpet beneath bulbs, meanders around shrubs and perennials nicely, and generally fills in space wherever it's needed!Pamper 'Stardust' the first year, giving it fairly good soil and plenty of water and food, but then let it go. It is quite tolerant of drought, and actually prefers dry soil. Heat doesn't faze it, and it tolerates quite a bit of humidity if given good air circulation (not crowded among other plants that cut off the breezes). If you are trying to grow a section of garden that needs little water, 'Stardust' is an excellent choice. Give this carefree spreader a try this season, and we think you'll love it! Zones 5-8. Pkt is 25 pelleted seeds.

Now here's a nice change of pace for your edging, containers, and border accents! Bronze Carex is just what its name promises -- an ornamental grass (easy and carefree!) that keeps its honey-toned leaves right through the summer heat and into fall! The only time it changes in when the new foliage emerges in spring -- it's as coppery-bright as a new penny, with pink highlights! This Carex quickly forms a neat little tuft, 10 to 12 inches high and 12 to 20 inches wide. Its fountainous habit adds a nice "weeping" look to mixed containers, and its bold color contrasts beautifully with all the nearby green-leaved plants. Just the scene-stealer you need for the spring bulb garden, to draw eyes away from the Daffodil foliage once it begins to decline, or for the front of the shrub border, or as a bright edging for the garden path! And this grass is so easy that you just can't go wrong. It thrives in full sunshine or part shade, tolerating heat, humidity, and even drought without greening out or dropping a leaf. Imagine it flanking your Rose garden, edging the patio, or cutting a curving path through a large display of sun-loving annuals! This seed is easy to start, too. Cover it well to germinate, and you should see sprouts in about 2 weeks. It's perennial in zones 7-9, and grown as an annual everywhere else. Never invasive, but easy as pie to grow and enjoy for three long seasons every year! Pkt is 30 seeds.

65 days. Bright red from the base to the lower leaves, Red Baron is one scallion that might qualify as an edible ornamental in the border or formal garden! Impervious to changes in weather or stresses in growing conditions, it keeps its bright colors -- the upper leaves are rich green -- throughout the growth period. Harvest the 12- to 15-inch stalks when the bulb begins to swell. The 1/4- to 3/4-inch-diameter shafts are tender and pungent.Start seed indoors in late winter to early spring for spring or summer harvest. Space seedlings 2 to 3 inches apart in the garden. If you want crisp, tender green onions, harvest the bulbs just after the swelling begins. Pkt is about 300 seeds.

Nothing transforms the spring garden like Candytuft, with its big clusters of white blooms covering the ground like a late snowfall. Attractive to butterflies, it begins the garden's season of glory with a huge flourish in spring. And Tahoeâ„¢ is the earliest yet, beginning several weeks before all others in mid-spring!Winner of Europe's top award for flowering seed (the Fleuroselect), Tahoeâ„¢ is much more compact than others, saving all its energy for making bigger flower clusters and many more of them! It quickly spreads 2 feet wide in the sunny garden, though only 8 to 10 inches high. It is never invasive, which makes it a great groundcover around bulbs, its white blooms making every color around them glow more brightly.Shear black this plant right after it blooms, and it will reward you by returning even more full and lush next year. The humble English Daisy never looked so good! This stunning bicolor is fully double, jammed with needle-thin, swirled petals, and larger than other Bellis. Resembling a sea anemone or exhibition-quality Dahlia, it is a nice way to dress up early spring in containers or the garden!Habanera Red Tips's blooms measure 2 inches across and appear even larger, for the central petals stand straight up in a tight red spiral. They completely hide the foliage on this neat, compact plant, which grows just 6 inches high and wide in partial shade. A fine choice for baskets, windowboxes, and patio containers, Habanera Red Tips also works well in the garden, nestled among the spring bulbs and early bloomers such as Sweet Alyssum Snow Crystals. In the south, you can even grow it as a cool-season annual, where it will bloom through winter among the Snaps and Pansies! It makes a stunning counterpart to the deep crimson Snapdragon, and a cheery companion to the blue-and-white Pansy Ultima Morpho. English Daisies are not difficult to grow, provided you do NOT cover the seeds at germination. They thrive in climates where nights are cold and summers are mild. Plant in partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Pkt is 50 seeds. Zones 4-8.

Such an elegant little lily, and so delightful in the shade! Commonly known as the Coral Lily for the bright tropical color of its blooms, this east Asian native has been a mainstay of western gardens since its 1816 introduction into cultivation. It is the parent of many other Turk's Cap cultivars, but we think it outdoes all its offspring in fragrance, color intensity, and garden vigor.Beginning in late spring (in most climates) and continuing through early summer, neatly recurved blooms of brightest scarlet-orange dangle from curvy candelabra-like stems on this upright plant. Sweetly fragrant, these turk's caps blooms appear in numbers up to 30 per stem! Best of all, they flower just as profusely in partial shade as they do in full sun, so L. pumilum can go where few other lilies dare follow in your garden -- the shade!Glossy foliage and slender stems complement the masses of cheery black-freckled flowers. And this lily reaches only 18 to 24 inches high and about a foot wide, so you can plant it even in small accent spaces as well as containers of all kinds. No longer do you have to deny yourself the beauty of lilies just because your garden space is limited! (And of course, over time it will spread gloriously if given the room!)L. pumilum is a superb cut-flower, and if you decide to grow it, your biggest dilemma will be deciding whether to keep the blooms in the garden or bring them indoors! Better plant it in two places so you can do both! Zones 3-8.
